14-man shortlist made public as NUFC chiefs prepare to hold transfer summit – Report

An intriguing piece on the transfer front emerged from The Mail last night, with writers Craig Hope and Simon Jones revealing a host of names believed to be on Newcastle United’s radar.

They report that a series of meetings will take place in the coming days to narrow down top targets ahead of this summer’s transfer market, and the article itself names 14 players of interest.

Going from front to back, here are the names mentioned in the report, with The Mail stating that moves for a new goalkeeper, centre-back, midfielder, winger and striker will be prioritised:

STRIKERS: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton), Darwin Nunez (Benfica), Patrik Schick (Bayer Leverkusen), Alexander Isak (Real Sociedad).

WINGERS: Moussa Diaby (Bayer Leverkusen), Brennan Johnson (Nottingham Forest)

MIDFIELDERS: Kalvin Phillips (Leeds), Yves Bissouma (Brighton)

CENTRE-BACKS: Josko Gvardiol (RB Leipzig), Lloyd Kelly (Bournemouth)

GOALKEEPERS: Bernd Leno (Arsenal) Sam Johnstone (West Brom), Dean Henderson (Man Utd), Kepa Arrizabalaga (Chelsea).

So, a few familiar names, with the likes of Nunez, Kelly and Henderson also players we were heavily linked with back in January, however players like Gvardiol – the young Croatian CB currently at RB Leipzig is a new name that’s been thrown into the mix here.

The Mail insist that Kepa would only be a loan option, while the four strikers stated in the piece all fit into the category of tall but mobile forwards who could add an exciting new dimension to Eddie Howe’s attack.

As for the two midfielders mentioned, it’s hard to know how we’d fit either Phillips or Bissouma into our team when we’re currently struggling to know who starts between Guimaraes, Willock, Joelinton and Shelvey, however both are quality operators at Premier League level and would automatically improve us in this area of the field.
