In amongst all the transfer gossip and tedious speculation, it was pretty clear that Sven Botman and Diego Carlos were two players Newcastle United pursued tirelessly during the January transfer window.
Both Lille and Sevilla stood firm, rejecting several bids from Tyneside for their star centre-backs, leaving many to believe we’d make fresh moves this summer.
However, The Mail’s Craig Hope – one of the most trusted North-East reporters – reckons the club may have moved on from BOTH.
He claims that Toon scouts watched Botman in his Champions League clash with Chelsea over the past month, but has heard recently that we are now looking at other options. Perhaps a sign AC Milan really have won the race for the big Dutchman? Who knows.
As for Carlos, Hope also reports that a fresh move for the Brazilian looks even less likely, believing his age and the fee demanded means this was a deal that was only going to be done in January if at all.
Interestingly, his latest piece for The Mail states that Joško Gvardiol of RB Leipzig and Bournemouth skipper Lloyd Kelly are players of interest ahead of a series of transfer meetings on Tyneside.
There could easily be a twist in the tale yet, especially when Botman talked up a move to Newcastle in a recent interview, however it seems the club might just be pursuing other options after all…
