Mark Clattenburg says referee missed red card during Spurs 5-1 Newcastle – Watch incident here

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg believes a ‘very clear’ red card incident was missed during our dismal 5-1 defeat at Spurs on Sunday afternoon.

He feels Rodrigo Bentancur was extremely lucky to stay on the pitch after an off the ball clash with Allan Saint-Maximin saw the Spurs midfielder throw an ‘attempted head ****’ towards the Frenchman.

Clattenburg admits that no contact was made, but is certain that the ‘intent was there’ – meaning VAR officials should’ve asked Martin Atkinson to take a closer look at the incident on the pitch-side monitor.

Watch the incident below, followed by what Clattenburg has wrote in his latest column:

This isn’t the first time VAR have totally ignored what would normally be deemed a red card offence by the letter of the law.

Remember Havertz’s elbow on Dan Burn and Emi Martinez wiping out Callum Wilson with a high tackle at Villa Park?

Based on our second half display, we may have still lost yesterday against 10-men – we were that bad – but it would be nice to get some consistency from VAR; a system that could work in principle but seems to be operated so poorly by those in charge.

  1. He’s right, but I’ve pretty much written VAR out of our season. Hopefully it gets addressed in the summer because we have a back catalogue of incidents.

  2. I hope Eddie Howe and the Newcastle United owners are kicking the referees and vars doors in wanting explanations on why all these blatant decisions are not being given. Man United and Sir Alex wouldn’t be letting them go and they would have got it resolved big time.
