Supercomputer predicts final Premier League table after Newcastle’s 5-1 defeat to Spurs – Photo

According to the statisticians at FiveThirtyEight, Newcastle United will end the season well clear of the relegation zone – despite yesterday’s worrying display at Spurs.

Tottenham cut through our defence with ease in the second half on Sunday, coming away 5-1 winners on a day that reminded fans and players (hopefully) that we are not safe just yet.

However, despite three straight defeats and yesterday’s collapse, FiveThirtyEight believe we have just a 5% chance of going down, instead predicting that we’ll finish in 15th on 40 points.

They reckon we’ll pick up another nine points this season and back Norwich (99%), Watford (83%) and Burnley (55%) to be relegated, forecasting Everton to survive by the skin of their teeth on 35 points.

See their predicted table in full below, seeing Man City pip Liverpool to the title, Arsenal make the top four ahead of Spurs and Aston Villa squeeze into the top 10:

So, fans may be concerned after Sunday’s horror-show at Spurs, but the statisticians and bookmakers seem pretty certain we’ll be OK, with Sky Bet pricing us at 14/1 to go down.

  1. At what point does a supercomputer just get called out for the spreadsheet that it is?
