Steve McClaren lined up for shock return to Premier League football – The Guardian

As revealed by The Guardian, Steve McClaren is a serious contender to be named Manchester United’s new assistant manager should Erik ten Hag land the job at Old Trafford.

The former Newcastle United boss worked closely with ten Hag during his time at FC Twente, with the Dutchman working under the 60-year-old over the 2008-09 season.

Not only that, the report states that the Ajax head coach is keen to have someone with experience of Premier League football and Manchester United by his side if he takes the job this summer.

This is something McClaren could offer, with him not only working under Sir Alex Ferguson between 1999 and 2001, but also building up experience from his time with Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Derby, Nottingham Forest and QPR.

That said, his recent stints in football have been less than impressive, with his last role in the dugout ending in tears as he left QPR in 17th upon his sacking three years ago.

So, just when we thought the former Toon boss’ days at Premier League level were over, it seems he’ll be one to watch if ten Hag does beat Pochettino to the Man Utd job this summer!
