New CB target identified by NUFC after Botman blow – and he’ll cost just £8m – The Telegraph

Newcastle United have joined the race to sign Mainz centre-back Moussa Niakhate, according to The Telegraph.

With it widely reported yesterday that long-term target Sven Botman is set to seal a summer move to AC Milan, it looks like the Frenchman is one of several names now under consideration.

In his latest transfer notebook piece for The Telegraph, Mike McGrath claims that Newcastle, West Ham and Everton are all showing interest in the Bundesliga captain who could be available at a bargain fee this summer.

The 26-year-old is entering the final 12 months of his contract at Mainz, who will allow him to leave for just £8m to avoid losing him on a free transfer next summer.

Niakhate is a former France U21 international who joined the German side from FC Metz back in 2018.

He stands 6ft 3′ tall and is a left-sided centre-back – like Sven Botman – who has shown versatility in his career by also operating at left-back when needed.

The Telegraph claim that a few unnamed Champions League club in Germany are also showing interest in the Frenchman, suggesting there’ll be plenty of competition for his signature this summer.
