Newcastle in ‘pole position’ to sign Ligue 1 star if club agree to meet £25m asking price – Report

Football Insider report that Newcastle are in ‘pole position’ to sign French wonderkid Hugo Ekitike this summer, claiming Stade Reims won’t stand in his way if their £25m asking price is met.

Following an unsuccessful move for the youngster on deadline day in January, it seems the club could be back in for the 19-year-old forward who’s bagged 10 goals and four assists in 24 games this season.

The young striker had originally turned down a move to Tyneside as he was reportedly unsure on the timing of the move, with some claiming that he was reluctant to leave his homeland midway through his breakthrough season in Ligue 1.

Now, it’s said that Newcastle are ‘in the driving seat’ to sign the France youth international – who certainly fits the clubs long-term ambitions – as the player is prepared to reassess his options this summer.

The club are currently struggling for goals with star forward Callum Wilson injury-plagued, Chris Wood scoring just once in 11 games and Dwight Gayle looking likely to leave after appearing just five times this season.

Ekitike would not just be one for the future, but someone who could make an impact at first-team level as one of the highest scoring teenagers in Europe’s top five leagues this season.
