Top NUFC target tells Toon chiefs he wants Champions League football – The Telegraph

As each week passes, it seems more and more unlikely that we’ll be able to attract Darwin Nunez to Newcastle United this summer.

The Benfica star was at it again last night, scoring against Liverpool in the quarter finals of the Champions League and proving a real handful for Virgil Van Dijk.

A host of Premier League scouts were said to be at the game, with Newcastle officials likely to be one of those in attendance, however The Telegraph report that our pursuit of the 22-year-old is a ‘long shot’ at best.

The piece states that ourselves, Brighton and West Ham have all shown serious interest and been in contact with the players’ representatives, but were told he is not prepared to sacrifice Champions League football after proving he is good enough to play on the world’s biggest stage.

Nunez not only has 28 goals in 26 starts this season, but has scored five of those in Europe against Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Ajax.

The Telegraph claim that January was almost certainly our last chance to sign the Uruguayan, who is now receiving interest from Manchester United and Atletico Madrid and expected to leave Benfica for at least £60m; our entire summer budget if the same paper is to be believed!

We are clearly huge admirers of the striker – i news’ Mark Douglas reckons he’s our top target in attack and he’s been named by The Mail, The Athletic and The Mirror as someone we’re keen to sign – but it feels like we may have missed the boat on both him and Milan-bound Sven Botman.

  1. Think we have to be realistic nunez and botman would be great signings but where not there yet hope I’m wrong and they do sign but the premier league players we’ve been linked with will be our best bet for where we are only way players of that calibre will sign is if we can 100% convince them of the project like we did with Bruno
