Early team news – 3 out, Howe facing late calls, 2 back in contention & Wolves without key duo

With tonight’s clash with Wolves just a few hours away, it’s a good time to look at the team news both Eddie Howe and Bruno Lage have shared ahead of the game.

The game will come too soon for Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Federico Fernandez, with Howe also confirming that a ‘late call’ will be made on Joe Willock as the midfielder is managing a “slight knee problem.”

The NUFC boss has also revealed that there’s still some illness in the camp, saying he’ll have to “wait and see” if that impacts his team selection tonight. No names were mentioned, but The Mail did reveal a few days ago that Joelinton came off at Spurs due to feeling unwell, so we’ll have to hope the big man is OK for this one.

On the plus side, Bruno Guimaraes has been declared fit to make his first start at St James’ Park after his late return from South America saw him named on the bench last weekend, while Miguel Almiron is also back in contention after overcoming illness.

As for Wolves, top scorer Raul Jimenez is suspended and star midfielder Ruben Neves ruled out with a knee injury, however right-back Nelson Semedo could make his comeback after missing their last three league games.

Here’s everything Howe had to say on the fitness front, with him also talking up Guimaraes ahead of what could be his first home start for the club…

Howe on illness in the camp:

Howe on Willock, Fernandez and other injury issues:

“Joe Willock has had a slight knee problem for a couple of weeks.

“He’s become a bit more aware of it in training so it’s something we need to stay on top of.

“We’ll make a late call on him. We don’t think it’s anything serious.

“Fede [Fernandez] has had various injuries since I’ve been here, so I wouldn’t say he’s 100% fit.

“He’s building up his resilience and needs more training time, but he’s someone we can rely on when we need him.

“No other [injury] issues, apart from the long-termers [Trippier and Wilson].”

Howe on Guimaraes:

“He’s someone I’ve really enjoyed working with. He’s very much a winner and has a great attitude to his training.

With his flamboyance and technique comes a steeliness which is hugely important in his position, so we’ll see what happens tomorrow.”

Howe on Almiron:

“Miggy has trained this week.

So we are delighted to have him back with us.
