Player confirms NUFC are his “first option” – New deal to be announced soon after Toon talks?

Fabian Schar has revealed that a decision on his future should be announced “soon”, insisting his “first option” is to sign a new contract at St James’ Park.

As things stand, the Swiss international is at risk of leaving the club on a free transfer this summer, with his current deal due to expire at the end of the season.

The 30-year-old has been brilliant since Eddie Howe arrived at the club, adding consistency to his game and scoring twice in his last six games for the club.

Now, speaking to The Chronicle, he’s confirmed that he is keen to sign a new deal at the club and believes he’ll be able to “say more” in a few weeks – hinting that an extension might be announced soon?

Here’s what he’s had to say:

“I think I will know soon.

“I enjoy playing for Newcastle United under Eddie Howe.

“Hopefully, we can say more in a few weeks.

“But I’m very happy here.

“Newcastle are my first option.”

With Clark and Fernandez likely to be moved on this summer and Schar proving his worth under Howe, it feels like a no-brainer to hand him a well deserved extension.
