Sky Sports’ Keith Downie has confirmed that Newcastle are keeping a close eye on highly-rated left-back, Aaron Hickey.
The North-East reporter says he has “been mentioned” during transfer talks and is someone we have been watching out in Italy.
This comes after well-known journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that we were showing interest in the Scot last month, stating we’d have ‘no issue’ paying the £15-20m fee Bologna are likely to demand.
Our interest in the 19-year-old appears to date back several years, with the Scottish Sun reporting that we had scouts watching him during Hearts’ 1-1 draw with Rangers in October 2019.
Speaking to Football FanCast, here’s what Keith Downie had to say when asked for an update on the transfer front:
“Aaron Hickey is one that has been mentioned.
“He’s been watched. The young Bologna, 19-year-old, Scottish defender.
“Hickey is a player that has been watched.”
So, is this a sign we are looking at potential alternatives to Matt Target – the impressive loanee who could seal a £15m permanent move from Aston Villa this summer – or might we be on the lookout for TWO new left-backs?
With Ritchie one of several who could be moved on, Lewis tipped to leave on loan after being left out of Howe’s 25-man squad and Dummett out of contract in June, this could be a position we look to strengthen over the coming months.
