According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle are ‘growing increasingly hopeful’ they’ll beat off competition to bring Christian Eriksen to St James’ Park this summer.
The 30-year-old has had an instant impact at Brentford following his arrival in January, however he could leave on a free transfer at the end of the season after only signing a six-month deal with the Bees.
Scott Wilson – The Echo’s chief writer – understands that Eriksen has been identified as one of several statement signings we could look to pull off this summer, with our new owners believing we have what it takes to tempt him.
The report states that we’ll be prepared to offer him a ‘significant’ pay-rise, also claiming that Amanda Staveley plans to pitch our ambitious project – including our bid to break the top six – to Eriksen and his representatives in due course.
Tottenham, Everton and West Ham have also been credited with an interest in the Danish international, who has bagged a goal and an assist in four starts for Brentford so far.
