Bruno Guimaraes’ former Lyon teammate linked with bargain move to NUFC this summer

Newcastle United have once again been linked with a summer move for Jason Denayer – the Lyon centre-back set to be available on a free transfer after deciding against a new deal with the Ligue 1 side.

This comes from journalist Ekrem Konur, who claims that we’re battling Napoli for the Belgian international who will know Bruno Guimaraes very well from their time together in France.

Denayer is also no stranger to Premier League football or the North-East itself, joining Man City in 2013 before spending a year on loan at Sunderland during the 2016/17 season.

This isn’t the first time we’ve been tipped to bring him to St James’ Park either, with The Chronicle and Sky Sports both confirming our interest in the 26-year-old in recent months.

The 6ft defender has made 102 appearances in four years at Lyon and could feature in their Europa League quarter final clash with West Ham tomorrow night.

He’s also a regular in the Belgium side, racking up 35 caps for his country and featuring twice at EURO 2020 before being dumped out by the eventual champions Italy in the last eight.

With January target Sven Botman looking set to join AC Milan this summer, Denayer could be a shrewd piece of business and another soo-to-be free agent we’d do well to snap up.
