Newcastle United have won the race to sign Galway United star Alex Murphy, according to reports in Ireland.
The Irish Examiner revealed that we’d submitted a €100,000 bid for the left-footed defender back in February and Raidió Teilifís Éireann – one of Ireland’s leading outlets – have now announced that he’s on his way to Tyneside.
RTE state that the 17-year-old will complete a move to St James’ Park when he turns 18 this summer, with him expected to slot straight into our U23 setup.
It’s claimed that Brighton, Celtic and Serie A side Torino all showed interest in Murphy, but Galway United’s representatives were ‘very pleased with how discussions have gone on Tyneside.’
He signed his first professional contract at Galway in August last year after making his debut against Athlone Town as a 16-year-old last season and has also represented Ireland at U18 level.
One to watch in a few months time and our first piece of business, it seems!
