According to The Sun, Newcastle and Everton are prepared to battle it out in the summer for the signing of Sunderland’s highly rated 14-year-old Chris Rigg.
The £1m-rated midfielder has already worked his way up to Sunderland’s Under-18s – with two goals and one assist in seven U18 Premier League appearances – and is expected to be poached by a top flight club in the transfer window.
The Black Cats have been known to produce a couple of stars over the years with current England players Jordan Henderson and Jordan Pickford both having developed their talents at the North East side.
However, with the Wearsiders spending four consecutive seasons in League One – and potentially a fifth – it is unlikely that they’ll be in a position to demand similar fees to what they received for the England stars.
Many experts have claimed that Rigg is the best player of his age in the country and could be swayed to a move to Tyneside given that he comes from a family of Newcastle fans.
