Eddie Howe has refused to confirm whether Matt Targett will complete a permanent move to St James’ Park this summer, saying opinions on him haven’t been “fully formed” just yet.
The Chronicle report that we have an option to sign the Aston Villa loanee for £15m at the end of the season, with the player himself admitting over the weekend that he’d love to stick around.
Most fans believe it’s a no-brainer and likely to be our first piece of incoming business this summer, feeling he’s more than earned his place.
Speaking to the press this morning, Howe has praised his “consistent” performances and revealed that he’s fitted into the group very well, however he was non-committal when asked if he’d be staying at the club this summer.
Interestingly, the NUFC boss also told local reporters that he “wants to keep” out of contract defender Paul Dummett – despite the fact he’s started just two games under Howe.
Here’s what he had to say about both, starting with his response when asked if we’d lined up a £15m move for Targett:
“Matt has done very well.
“There’s still games to play this season and opinions to be fully formed, but he’s performed very well and fitted into the team and group very well.
“He’s been very consistent with his performances.”
