Wor Flags stepped up just when Allan Saint-Maximin needed them last night, producing another brilliant display dedicated to the Frenchman.
Maxi hasn’t scored since January and sometimes looks like a player trying too hard, however he was clearly boosted by the pre-match tribute that saw a host of gold flags create a number 10 at the Gallowgate End.
The tribute came at the perfect time for the 25-year-old, reminding him that he is still adored here – despite some grumbles on social media and the odd report suggesting he could be sold this summer.
After saluting the fans as he entered the field, he then sent this emotional message to Newcastle supporters on Twitter, saying he will remember this moment for the rest of his life:
“I will never be able to thank you enough for this.
“I will remember this day for the rest of my life !
“Thanks for everything!”
The winger also had this to say in a video message to fans just a couple of minutes after the full time whistle at St James’ Park:
