€20m release clause made public as journalist reveals Newcastle’s interest in Bundesliga striker

According to German journalist Christian Falk, Newcastle have entered the race to sign Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi alongside Premier League rivals West Ham and Southampton.

The Bundesliga reporter – who works for Sport Bild – also reveals that the Nigerian international has a €20m release clause in his contract; which could be a snip for a player who’s bagged 18 goals this term.

The powerful 24-year-old has averaged a goal in every two games for Union Berlin – who are pushing for a surprise top four finish and Champions League spot just a few years on from promotion.

Awoniyi could make his return to the Premier League after he was sold by Liverpool for £6.5million last summer without making a single appearance for the Merseyside club.

Following a campaign where our strikers have either struggled for fitness, game time or actually scoring goals, manager Eddie Howe will be keen to add to his attacking arsenal in the summer.

Prolific goal scorer Callum Wilson has missed 28 league games through injury since signing in 2020 while Chris Wood has only managed two goals in 14 games after his £25million transfer in January.

With a reported release clause around £17m, the 6ft forward could offer great value for money if he can bring his solid goal scoring record to Tyneside next season.
