Ex-Mag Olivier Bernard believes it may not be long until another Ligue 1 star joins Bruno Guimaraes on Tyneside.
The former Lyon and Newcastle defender claims Lucas Paqueta “could be on his way” to St James’ Park this summer, saying he has a “really good feeling” about the Brazilian and knows the club are in talks over a potential move for the attacking midfielder.
Paqueta is not only best friends with Guimaraes, but a player that also has a brilliant relationship with him on the pitch, seeing the pair link up superbly for club and country.
Bernard feels he is the “perfect number 10” and someone who’d add goals, technique and awareness to this Newcastle side – also backing us to finish in the top eight next season if we do bring him to St James’ Park this summer.
Here’s what the former NUFC left-back told Newcastle Fans TV about the Lyon playmaker:
“I’ve got a really good feeling about Paqueta. He could be on his way.
“Once you get one, you get them all. To be honest, it’s a snowball for me.
“I’d love that, and I know they’re talking…so it looks good.
“He’s Bruno, probably with 10 goals a season. He’s an old-fashioned number 10 that has got bags of technique and awareness, he’s ridiculous.
“I wouldn’t say he works hard, but he’s always in the pockets. You’ve got to watch him, he’s always between lines and he makes the link between midfielders and forwards.
“He’s a perfect number 10 and a left footer, so he is something I would love to see at the club.
“If we get him, we will definitely be in the top eight [next season].”
Who knows if Olivier has any inside knowledge on this one, but he could have a few contact at Lyon – he played for the club early in his career – and will know Ligue 1 better than most as a football mad Frenchman, so these are certainly promising comments on a transfer so many on Tyneside want to see this summer.
Bernard thinks he is the “ideal number 10” and that he would be a great addition to this Newcastle team in terms of goals, technique, dordle and awareness. He also thinks we would finish in the top eight next season if we bring him to St. James’s Park this summer.
