Newcastle at the ‘top of the list’ to sign Sporting Lisbon star with £50m release clause – Report

Acording to Portuguese newspaper Record, Newcastle and Man City sit ‘top of the list’ of clubs looking to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes this summer.

The 23-year-old has been key for the Lions in both the league and Champions League – where they exited in the round of 16 at the hands of Man City – and is expected to be on the move with his release clause set at €60m (£50.5m).

Record insist that the Portuguese international is a player we have ‘followed closely’ for some time, stating that we’ve made two attempts to sign him previously.

The same outlet credited us with an interest in the player back in January last year, while he was also mentioned as a summer target by O Jogo in the summer of 2021, suggesting we hold long-term interest.

That said, we’ll be facing fierce competition if Man City are also admirers, with manager Pep Guardiola full of praise for the 6ft’ midfielder after the two sides met in the Champions League recently.

Record state that he will only leave for an ‘ambitious project’ and won’t leave for much less than £50m if that release clause is not activated over the summer.

The Brazilian-born youngster has gone on to make 97 first-team appearances for the Lisbon-based club since arriving in January 2019 for just £500,00, winning the league last year as well as the domestic cup in 2021 and 2022.
