Club announce surprise new deal and double boost now confirmed ahead of Man City trip

Newcastle United have announced that Paul Dummett has signed a one-year deal that will keep him contracted to the club until the end of the 2022/23 season.

The Geordie defender has featured just three times under Eddie Howe, struggling with injuries but also being way down the defensive pecking order.

With this in mind, it’s a surprise to see him handed an extension. Personally, I’d have preferred to see him moved on to free up a place in our 25-man squad ahead of the coming season, however it seems Howe feels he still has a lot to offer – both on and off the pitch.

Elsewhere, the club have confirmed that Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson are both back in full training ahead of Sunday’s trip to Manchester City.

You can see both in action below, followed by comments from Dummett and Howe (via NUFC.co.uk) after the 30-year-old put pen to paper:

Paul Dummett:

“This is a hugely exciting time for the football club and the city so I’m delighted to be committing another year here and staying at my boyhood club.

“I’m immensely proud that next season will be my tenth involved with the first team and I’m really looking forward to being part of what is a big season to come.

Howay the lads!”

Eddie Howe:

“Paul is a consummate professional who has given so much to this club and I’m delighted he will be staying with us.

“He is a player and a person I like very much.

He leads by example both in the dressing room and on the pitch and I’m pleased to retain someone with his positive influence and defensive capabilities.”
