Toon suffer double injury blow as Howe reveals NUFC duo ruled out for remainder of the season

Following a 5-0 beating from Man City, manager Eddie Howe revealed that Newcastle duo Jonjo Shelvey and Joe Willock will miss our final two games of the Premier League season against Arsenal and Burnley.

The pair were absent from the matchday squad against the title favourites and, during his post-match press conference, Howe confirmed that both players are out for the season.

Shelvey in particular has become key to Howe’s game plan and has enjoyed a quietly impressive end to the season under the new manager, adding composure and control to our midfield.

On the other hand, summer signing Joe Willock has been moved to the bench following the arrival of Bruno Guimaraes – but the youngster has still offered crucial moments such as the cross for our 95th minute winner against Leicester.

Here’s what Howe’s had to say on both:

“Joe has had a knee problem for a couple of months. We felt it was gone but it came back against Liverpool last week, so it looks like his season is over.”

“Jonjo has a calf injury, which is quite similar to the one he had at the start of this season, so it looks like both players are out for the season.”

Both will be sorely missed as we prepare to end our season on a high, but thanks to our good run of form with eight wins in 12, safety is now almost guaranteed.

Howe then said this to Sky Sports when asked for this reaction to that 5-0 defeat at the Etihad:
