Newcastle walk away from summer deal due to £150,000 wage demands – The Telegraph

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United will NOT be signing Jesse Lingard this summer.

In his latest ‘exclusive’, Luke Edwards reveals that the 29-year-old’s wage demands have proved to be excessive, meaning summer move to St James’ Park won’t be happening.

The report states that Lingard is asking for £150,000-per-week – demands that are ‘far too high’ for the club’s wage structure – and a ‘huge signing-on fee’, meaning he would be an expensive ‘free agent’ and the highest paid player at the club should he sign.

It seems this does not sit well with Eddie Howe, who is set to target young players instead – being conscious of the fact three of our five January additions are aged 30 or above.

Lingard has been a long-term target and almost signed in January, only for Man Utd’s ludicrous demands to scupper that move as they asked for a £16m loan fee.

The Telegraph state that he has been discussed in recent recruitment meetings, however the club have decided to walk away from this deal as they refuse to pay extortionate wages for a player who has spent most of this season on the sidelines and turns 30 later this year.
