3 ruled out and 3 fresh dilemmas for Eddie Howe as early team news arrives ahead of Arsenal clash

Eddie Howe has been speaking ahead of Newcastle United’s final home game of the 2021/22 season, offering some early team news as we look ahead to Arsenal’s visit to St James’ Park.

Speaking at the latest pre-match press conference, the NUFC boss revealed that Jonjo Shelvey’s season-ending calf injury is a serious one, but is confident both he and Joe Willock will both be fine in time for pre-season.

Both are out of tonight’s clash with Arsenal along with Federico Fernandez (achilles), but it’s better news on Ryan Fraser.

The Scotland international is in contention again after returning to training, while Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier are both pushing to start after they made cameo appearances at Man City – although Howe seems conflicted when it comes to starting all three.

Here’s everything he had to say on all of the above:

Howe on Ryan Fraser:

“Ryan returned to training on Thursday – which has been great to see – and has trained very well. Fingers crossed that he’s fine.”

Howe on Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson:

“Both players would say they’re very keen to start but my job is to make sure I’m doing what’s best for the team. We’ve got to make sure they’re fit enough to last a long period in the game. We’ll make a decision based on the training week.”

How on Jonjo Shelvey:

“Jonjo has quite a serious calf injury, which is similar to the one he sustained at the start of the season. He’ll be out for a period of time but we expect him back for pre-season with no problems.”

Howe on Joe Willock:

“Joe has had an issue with a tendon in his knee for a while. We thought we’d solved the problem but it’s come back. He needs a period of rest, he’s had a couple of injections, but we anticipate he’ll be fine for pre-season.”

Howe on Federico Fernandez:

“Feddy Fernandez has had a slight Achilles problem. Apart from that, I think we’re OK.

  1. Hope St Max pulls his finger out and sticks to Saka like glue, can’t see it happening unfortunately!
Would play Murphy if I was selecting the team.
