“There’s a few noises” – Keith Downie issues update on Matt Targett’s NUFC future

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Sky Sport’s North East reporter Keith Downie has played down the chances of Newcastle signing on-loan full back Matt Targett permanently from Aston Villa.

The defender joined the club in January and has been ever-present in the squad, making 14 appearances since his arrival, with manager Eddie Howe said to have been keen on making the move permanent.

We have previously bene quoted for a fee of around £15million – a steal for a Premier League proven defender in today’s market.

However, Downie has since revealed ‘it might not happen’ due to ‘a few noises that raise a couple of question marks.’

There are also multiple Premier League clubs such as Leicester, Leeds and Wolves interested in the 26-year-old’s talents, but according to 90min, a move to Tyneside is still the ‘favourable’ option.

“There’s a few noises around the Targett thing that make me think it might not happen, unless there’s a very clever game being played, there’s a few noises that raise a couple of question marks to whether that one is going to happen or not.”

  1. Only mark against him is pace, will that get worse with age? Dies Howe want to play fast counter attack formation going forward? Pace in the PL is a minimum unfortunately.
