Newcastle United loanee set for Wembley in play-off final showdown

Newcastle midfielder Matty Longstaff has spent the last six months at Mansfield in a fairly successful loan spell that could end in promotion to League One.

The 22-year-old broke into the Newcastle squad back in 2019 and scored a very memorable winner in a 1-0 victory over Manchester United.

Since then, the academy graduate has received little game time in the Premier League and, following a disappointing loan to Aberdeen earlier this season where he only made five appearances, was struggling for form.

However, his time at Mansfield where he has six goals and two assists in 16 games has been very helpful for not just his development but for his confidence too.

On Saturday 28th May, Longstaff and his teammates will face Port Vale in the League Two play-off Final and will hope to join fellow loanee Elliot Anderson in securing promotion to the third division.

With his future at his boyhood club uncertain at the moment, his mind will be fully set on next weekend before returning to Tyneside to discuss his next steps.
