Burnley 1-2 Newcastle: Wilson breaks hearts at Turf Moor as Toon finish 11th

Two goals from Callum Wilson and some heroic late defending was enough to see us end the season with a win at Burnley on the final day of the 2021/22 campaign.

The result sees us finish on our highest points tally (49) for eight years and in 11th place, while Burnley have suffered relegation to the Championship after Leeds’ 2-1 win at Brentford made certain of their survival.

It was a fitting end to a rollercoaster of a season that’s seen us go from Bruce, Ashley and favourites to go down, to Howe, ambitious new owners and a much improved side who are finally playing to their potential.

A shame we couldn’t secure that top 10 finish we deserved, however this has been a turnaround unlike anything we’ve ever seen before in Premier League history. Not only did we defy the odds by staying up – no side has ever done this when failing to win any of their opening 14 games – we would’ve ended the season 10th had Brighton not come from behind to beat West Ham.

It was also great to see Wilson back and doing what he does best – bullying centre-backs, making great runs and scoring goals – with Allan Saint-Maximin also causing problems throughout and coming away unlucky not to have bagged a hat-trick of assists.

Here’s all of today’s results – seeing Man City come back from 2-0 down to lift the title at Liverpool’s expense – and the final Premier League table, followed by our match report in full from a frantic day at Turf Moor:

  • Burnley 1-2 Newcastle
  • Brentford 1-2 Leeds
  • Man City 3-2 Aston Villa
  • Liverpool 3-1 Wolves
  • Arsenal 5-1 Everton
  • Norwich 0-5 Tottenham
  • Crystal Palace 1-0 Man Utd
  • Leicester 4-1 Southampton
  • Chelsea 2-1 Watford
  • Brighton 3-1 West Ham

Eddie Howe made TWO changes from the side that won so impressively earlier this week, seeing Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles come in for Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar.

Sadly, he was forced to make another less than 10 minutes into the game, as Joelinton was stretchered off with what looked like a potentially serious ankle injury. He looked in real discomfort and had his name chanted by the travelling Toon Army.

Jacob Murphy came on in his place and it looked like we switched from a 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1 with that, seeing Miguel Almiron move into a number 10 role and Murphy go out to the right.

Our first effort of the game came from Guimaraes after some good play from Wilson. The Brazilian had his edge of the box shot saved by Pope and it was cleared for a corner. Trippier’s back post delivery was parried by Pope and touched on by Collins’ outstretched hand.

The referee didn’t see it, but was soon surrounded by black and white shirts and told to have a look at the monitor by VAR. A penalty was given and Wilson made no mistake, sending Pope the wrong way to bag his first goal since returning from a long-term injury. 1-0 Newcastle and Burnley were going down as things stood, with Leeds drawing 0-0 at Brentford midway through the first half.

As you’d expect, the hosts tried to get back at us in a bid to get back into a game they simply couldn’t afford to lose. They enjoyed a small period of pressure leading up to the half hour mark, but we defended well, with Lascelles in particular making a solid start to the game.

After that, we took control of the game and weren’t giving Burnley much of the ball. Our pace on the break was threatening to cause problems and our midfield three looked to have more quality in possession in what had generally been a scrappy start to a tense affair at Turf Moor.

Aside from two long distance strikes from Dwight McNeil, we’d restricted Burnley to very little and had a huge chance to make it 2-0 in first half stoppage time when Targett’s ball down the left released Saint-Maximin on the counter.

The Frenchman had too much pace for Brownhill, burst into the box and had a low effort across goal well saved by Pope. ASM could and should have done better, but it was a good break and more proof that our pacey front four were too quick for this Burnley back line.

Half-time came and we were 1-0 up and into the top 10 as things stood, with Brighton losing 0-1 to West Ham and Brentford currently level with Leeds!

Burnley brought on Wout Weghorst at the break – the giant Dutchman who replaced Chris Wood in January – but it was us who had the first near miss, as a lovely cross from Jacob Murphy just evaded black and white shirts in the box.

Bad news then arrived from Brighton, who moved back into the top 10 at our expense when a second half strike from Joel Veltman made it 1-1 in their clast with West Ham at The Amex.

Soon after a Saint-Maximin led counter almost led to another goal for Wilson, Turf Moor then went silent as news filtered in that Leeds had just taken the lead at Brentford, meaning Burnley may now need TWO second half goals to stay up.

Then, after Almiron blazed over after more good work from Saint-Maximin, the Frenchman did brilliantly to lay it on a plate for Wilson, who latched onto his ball across the box and guided the ball into the far corner to make it 2-0!

Burnley were going down and we were a West Ham goal away from a top 10 finish, although both those things were thrown into doubt when Maxwell Cornet made it 2-1, scoring at the second attempt after his first effort was parried by Dubravka.

Chris Wood came on against his former club and Saint-Maximin made way, presumably to give us more presence up top and some extra cover out wide, as Almiron moved out to the left and we switched to a 4-4-2.

The Clarets were building momentum and pushing for an equaliser, with it taking goal line clearances from Lascelles and Targett to keep us ahead! Brentford had equalised against Leeds, so Burnley knew an equaliser would be enough to keep them up should the score line remain the same in West London.

Image

Brighton went 2-1 up against West Ham, meaning 11th looked like our best possible finish should we hang on at Turf Moor – and we really were hanging on at times!

We had a few big chances on the counter, however Bruno lost his footing at the crucial time and, on another occasion moments later, Almiron’s control let him down just when we looked to have a man over.

Miggy then made way for Matt Ritchie – who came on for what will almost certainly be his last appearance in black and white – as we looked to run down the clock. Four minutes of added time were signalled and Burnley almost equalised through Cornet, but that missed chance was followed by a Leeds winner at Brentford.

The full-time whistle went and Burnley were down, Leeds were staying up and Man City were champions, with their stunning comeback from 2-0 down against Aston Villa enough to see them lift the title after Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Wolves.

Back to Newcastle, it wasn’t a top 10 finish but ending the season in 11th place was an incredible effort. From winless after 14 games to the best points total we’ve managed in eight years is some achievement.

We’ve been through the mill at times over the past year, but it’s all been worth it in the end. This is a team to be proud of and one that’s only going to get better with ambitious new owners and an ever-improving manager on our side.

Next up, a huge summer off the pitch and a well deserved break for the squad – although we’d like to bet that workaholic Eddie Howe barely gives himself a minute’s rest!

  1. Bruce 11 games 5 points
    Howe 27 games 44 points
    Extrapolated
    Howe 38 games 62 points = 6th
Next season stronger squad ? 72+ for 4th? (Spurs on 71 this season)

  2. I thought we brought Wood on because we had been playing a lot of long balls that their centre backs ate up but mainly as an extra defender for their corners of which there were many. They had a period of sustained pressure with lots of corners and a few free kicks in dangerous areas. If it was a Bruce team I would be watching, knowing we would inevitably concede. And he was a centre half so he should have had us well drilled for opposition set pieces.

  3. At the start of the season I predicted Burnley and 2 of the promoted teams would go down so I got that right.

I just watched Arsenal and Everton mainly to compare how Everton did against how we did. It really was chalk and cheese. Arsenal battered them and it was a game that most expected from us against the Gunners. Everton played like a Bruce team with a 9-0-1 formation. I think they will be in a relegation battle next year because they cannot buy any players. That will be the main outcome of the Leeds and Burnley complaint; that it puts the spotlight on future business that the Scouse Mackems will do.

Guaranteed 6 points for us against the Blue Bindippers so there’s a sliver lining there.

  4. After Everton last week and the incident with Viera you would think there would be better security at Man City. There is footage of the Villa goalie getting hit. I watched some of the “celebrations” and it was moronic. They were trying to bring down the goal frame and you had grown men putting kids on the roof of the net.

I understand the emotions can take over but sometimes it is a bit much. Most of them were on the pitch just to get selfies I bet. I just do not understand this obsession with selfies. Most of them look terrible anyway and show double chins or are pointed up peoples noses.

Ice – brilliant mate, pleased he’s got sorted and it sounds like a job offer of a lifetime that!!. Well he moved to Chester – he just dropped the le Street ?.

It’s a lovely area. I’ve got one Aunty that lives in Cheadle Hulme just outside of Manchester and my other Aunty lived in a place called Huntington just on the outskirts of Chester. So when the boy was little we’d go visit & go to the zoo.

She’s moved to Oxford now like the selfish mare ? and the other is about to move to Milton Keynes.
They’ve done alright for a couple of Benwell birds though ??.

See Villa got Kamara and are after Phillips.

Prem – that’s really disappointing about Kamara coz I like you thought he’d be idea for our midfield.

I was initially annoyed when I saw that, but I’m determined to stick to my guns – my only transfer demand this summer is Targett – Howe can pick the rest ?

  9. Always like 2 CM working together, kamara and Phillips would be awesome, We’ve seen Rice Phillips for England, But I think Big Joe and Bruno are as good.

For me its about the attacking options. All we really have are Wilson and ASM. We need options for Wilson, a CAM and a RW.

Other than LB the defence needs a bit of tweeking. and Dubravka needs a strong challenge.

Prem – I think it depends on what shape Howe wants to go with next season. Does he stay 4-3-3 or does he look to change that with new players in. I hope he doesn’t, and he certainly knows how to coach this formation well enough so stick with what you’re good at & strengthen I say.

Priorities for me are LB (hopefully Targett), LCB (cover for Burn), a first choice RF (ahead of Fraser, Mig and Murph), and a CF (cover/competition for Wilson)

That as a bare minimum this summer window would do.

I do have some concerns about just how affective we will be without Ashworth though.

  11. I’ve been doing a bit of YouTube scouting on Ekitike and I think he could quite easily be that right sided forward I think we are looking for.

I think it would probably suit his game more than the central position anyway. He’s full of pace, loves running at defenders & a lot of his play is in the channels from his YouTube highlights – I know that doesn’t give the full picture.

But I think ASM on the left, Hugo on the right & Wilson through the middle would be dangerous imo.

Behind them, Joelinton, Bruno & Paqueta??

      (Quote)

  12. Nickson has done well. The only blot on his copybook was Joelinton but after 2 years of being Bruced even that has worked out. I will give him a pass on Hendrick as I am sure Ashley didnt give him any money and we got him on a free.

      (Quote)

  13. Hendrick’s not even worth a free! I think we need another goalie as No1 or back up, CB with Lascelles dropping to Clark’s position. A dedicated DM, a winger who’s better than what we have and a striker. And Paqueta for fun.

  14. Every club in the league will have beaten Newcastle to their new signings – coz we’ve been linked to pretty much every sod out there!!.

It’s going to be important not to read every single headline written this summer & focus on what IS actually happening.
It also seems that every Newcastle fan with a mobile phone is setting up a YouTube channel offering some credence to every rumour circulating ?.

I for one will jump all over it coz I won’t be able to help myself ?. But I will take it all with a pinch of salt until I see whoever it maybe holding up that shirt.

  15. Given we wouldn’t meet Lingards wage demands, that will of sent shock waves through the agents who will now likely be pushing the players they represent to go elsewhere. They will realize we are not the easy touch they probably thought which is no bad thing but it could effect who we can now get realistically .

What’s nice is that it’s a two fingers up to all the pundits that said we’d throw money around to buy the league. It’s a project and steady growth from what I can work out, which is good.

  16. Ice: the Longstaff issue will be settled within 8 days when his contract expires. I thought he has looked OK in the last 2 games. Maybe if Eddie has him playing to a plan like Rafa did there might be a player there. I sort of feel sorry for the lad because he was coming back from a serious injury and was Bruced. Nobody could look good in the 9-0-1 system where the only “tactic” was to give it to Miggy or Maxi and tell them to run the ball upfield.

      (Quote)

  17. We have to give Jamaal Lewis at least the pre-season. He was injured when Eddie got here and still showed signs when he played. He had an operation so let’s see what he is like when fit. Sign Targett as well because they are different types of players. Lewis likes to get forward and go on the overlap like the Liverpool fullbacks do.

I think we will regret it if we sell him without giving him a chance.

      (Quote)

  18. I think I would rather go with Sharpy’s call of Joe Gomez as a centre back than some of the others we have been linked with. Diego Carlos is almost 30 and Botman blew hot and cold against Chelsea and supposedly hasnt had the greatest season. The problem with him is that a CBs 1st priority is to not make mistakes and he looks like he has a mistake in him. He might mature and become the next Virgil Van Dijk and I think that is what our scouts are hoping for. Gomez is the safer option if Liverpool will sell him.

  19. I still shake my head when I think of how we survived those 2 years under Bruce. I have never in my life seen such awful football. We were bottom in all of the metrics that are tracked to show where a team is and should be. It was pure blind luck.

  20. icedog: imo hes too slow for our m/f

Ice – I’m asking more hoping he hasn’t to be honest.
I really wanted him to come good, but he’s one of the few players who hasn’t seemed to have gotten better under Howe.
He rans around a lot but doesn’t do a great deal – though I do think he was very good against Arsenal.

Talk was he’d been offered a new deal & on their last trip to Saudi, he was the player they strapped the body cam to in the training sessions. Maybe I read that to suggest he was staying, but it seems the contract offered isn’t to his likely – or maybe Howe can’t promise him more than a back up role.

If he goes though, along with Hayden, Hendrick & even Matty – we will need 2 midfielders in I reckon.

Prem – Miggy isn’t a CM, nowhere near physical enough to play in the middle in the PL – he barely gets by out wide!!.

Miggy could cover the left or right sided wide positions, but for me we need 2 CMs if Longstaff goes.

If he sticks with 4-3-3 then I’m not sure where Miggy fits in.

I’m tempted to say without a great keeper you get nothing, and Jan Oblak is entering the final year of his contract. But I’m not convinced that Dubravka is a liability.
Our defence has been decent under Howe the only games where we have conceded more than one since Christmas was against City and Spurs.
I think it’s our attack that needs more goals. Is that because Wilson was out. Was it because we don’t create enough chances?
I think we need somebody that they need to double mark like ASM giving us more chances. Perhaps someone like Heung-min Son from Spurs. or Kevin de Bruyne
Of those we have been linked with I’ll take Hugo Ekitike

    6. Shelvey

That leaves 5 places for new players, 6 in you include Targett. If we need more space I can see us selling one of Miggy or Murphy or even Jonjo if he is demanding a place every week. Not sure why he would with his recent injury record as he is now only a 25 game a season player.

We dont really have to substantially disrupt the current squad to make it much better. If our budget is 150 mil we can get 3 starters and a couple for the bench.

  58. Looks like the pre-season has been fixed with home games against Atalanta and Bilboa. My guess is they will throw in a couple of away friendlies. I would choose someone like Sheffield Utd or Boro.

Maybe we can avenge Steve Bruce’s 1-0 loss to non-league York City last year?

  59. Eric Sykes:
Had a look at the squad and made a probable keep list. They are:

    1. Dubs
    2. Dummett
    3. Schar
    4. Lascelles
    5. Joelinton
    6. Shelvey
    7. Wilson
    8. St Max
    9. Tripps
    10. Krafth
    11. Wood
    12. Fraser
    13. Murphy
    14. Miggy
    15. Willock
    16. Burn
    17. Bruno
    18. Lewis
    19. Longstaff
    20. Targett

That leaves 5 places for new players, 6 in you include Targett. If we need more space I can see us selling one of Miggy or Murphy or even Jonjo if he is demanding a place every week. Not sure why he would with his recent injury record as he is now only a 25 game a season player.

Eric – I like how you’ve done that mate. There’s a visual reality to our squad & what the gaps are & why there needs to be a focus on who we go after – especially as the noise of the media linking us with everyone can be so distracting!!.

I think Miggy is vulnerable on that list. But we could loan out Lewis as well you know – that would create a space & make more sense to his rehab back to the first team squad.

Playing somewhere regularly in the championship next season then seeing where he is from there.

I think we’ll need that extra place really coz I think we need a GK, LCB, LB (2 if you count Targett), CM, ACM, RF, CF.

  60. Is anyone else still having to put their details in all the time – it would be good to get an update, or even better a fix to it like ??‍♂️?
