Newcastle’s route to a top 10 finish explained – Here’s what needs to happen today

Miraculously, Newcastle are still in with a chance of finishing in the top half despite not winning any of our first 14 Premier League games – a feat nobdoy has ever achieved whilst surviving relegation.

However, while that may sound exciting as well as completely astounding considering the position we were in six months ago, it’ll require three results to go our way on the final day.

First of all, for us to even consider the top half, a victory against Burnley is an absolute must as we are currently two points away from Brighton in 10th.

From there, we would need both Brighton to lose at home to West Ham as well as Brentford (11th) to either lose or draw at home to Leeds – which in turn would keep Leeds up and send Burnley down.

Here’s the Premier League table from 7th-20th heading into the season finale:

Unfortunately, due to our -19 goal difference, ninth-placed Leicester are too far out of reach – we would go level with them on points if we beat Burnley and they lost at home to Southampton, but their goal difference is much better.

If we were to somehow pull a top ten finish off, it would make it very difficult not to consider Eddie Howe as manager of the season – even if Pep is holding the trophy by the end of the day.
