Newcastle United land first England call since 2016 – but Toon duo snubbed by Southgate

Kieran Trippier has been recalled to the England squad after he missed the last selection through injury, but Newcastle duo Callum Wilson and Dan Burn have missed out.

The 31-year-old will join up with squad in preparation for our four Nations League fixtures against Hungary (home and away), Germany and Italy next month.

Our last player to have been called up to the national squad was Andros Townsend back in 2016, prior to our imminent relegation to the championship.

Despite making just six appearances – five starting – since joining in January, the La Liga champion has been crucial both on and off the pitch in contributing to our good run of form.

However, both Callum Wilson and Dan Burn will be disappointed to have missed out after showing some impressive form in the last few weeks.

Despite his injury keeping him out for over four months, the striker scored two against Burnley over the weekend to ensure he remains top scorer at the club whilst Burn has made a huge defensive impact since arriving in January.
