The 2021/22 Premier League season has come to a close and, in true football terms, it was a campaign of two halves for Newcastle. In the opening half of the season, we were involved in a relegation scrap and our Premier League future looked to be in serious double. Then, in came Eddie Howe, and we were able to finish the campaign strongly.
Here is a look at who were the standout Toon players during the 2021/22 season.
Bruno Guimaraes
One of our marquee signings from the January transfer window was Bruno Guimaraes, and the Brazilian has not disappointed fans since he arrived in the northeast. The former Lyon midfielder has been outstanding and has firmly established himself as a favourite at the club.
Hopefully, the Brazil international should help us attract other world-class players this summer. As it stands, we are currently priced at odds of 80/1 according to the outright William Hill football betting markets. If more players like Guimaraes arrive, we could have a better chance of making a challenge for the league than those odds suggest.
Although he was only at the club for the second half of the campaign, Guimaraes’ impact has been huge. He scored a brace in our 2-1 victory over Leicester, while his back-heel volley helped us beat Southampton back in March.
Matt Targett
Another one of Howe’s January signings was Matt Targett. Like Guimaraes, Targett has paved a path of glory for the Magpies. The on-loan Aston Villa defender strengthened our side at the back and has also demonstrated that he is a full back who can defend and go forward in equal measures.
The left-back played every minute for Newcastle since he arrived at the club. It’s worth remembering that he completed 76 tackles for Aston Villa and Newcastle during the 2021/22 campaign, which left him 14th in the whole league for the defensive stat.
It remains to be seen if the club will make a permanent move for the defender in the summer. If he does not return, his impact will not be forgotten as he played a crucial role in helping the Mags climb up the table.
Callum Wilson
Finally on this list, we have to credit Newcastle’s leading goalscorer this season: none other than Callum Wilson. He ended the campaign with eight Premier League goals despite only featuring 18 times, so all in all, he had a decent strike rate across the year.
Wilson will be hoping to secure a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup later this year. Undoubtedly, he will have done his chances no harm with his performances for the Mags this season.
The Newcastle number nine netted a brace in the final game of the season against Burnley. Howe was full of praise for the striker following the match and his comments suggest he will continue to be an important player for the club next season. In addition, the former Bournemouth man was named Newcastle’s Player of the Year last season and has had another fine campaign, even if his goal tally was down a little from the previous year.
It is going to be an exciting summer to see who joins the club in the upcoming transfer window. Hopefully, in 12 months’ time, this list will be even longer and we will struggle to single out players from a team who have excelled on the pitch.
Dan Burn and Joe Linton are missing. How can someone who didn’t even start half the prem games be a standout?

That said, there are plenty of reasons to believe that they will be back better than ever sooner rather than later.
