Toon U-turn on Allan Saint-Maximin move – but there’s a catch if £50m man stays at SJP – Report

As reported by the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, Allan Saint-Maximin now looks set to STAY at the club this summer as there appears to be ‘no market’ at the £50m asking price previously set.

There is now also growing belief that the 25-year-old could benefit from another year under Eddie Howe, although the player will want to be rewarded with a new deal that sees him become one of the club’s top earners.

A few weeks ago, it was said the owners believed Saint-Maximin to be “their most saleable asset” and priced him at around £50million in order to balance the books for FFP and bring in some new faces in the summer.

However, the talented Frenchman now looks to be staying on Tyneside following a season where he had the most goal contributions out of everyone in the team despite his frustrating play-style.

While many wonder if he is enough of a team player to fit in Howe’s plans, there is no doubting the former Nice man’s talents – which could be integral to our game-plan next season should either Callum Wilson stay fit or we sign another clinical forward.

  1. I wouldn’t just reward a player with a bumper new deal after having a mediocre season, that’s the road to ruin. I would however, give that player incentives to hit next season that will trigger a certain deal on better wages. ASM needs to let his football do the talking and not his agent, period.

  2. I love the concept that there’s a catch to him staying, and that is that he will have to have a salary increase.
First of all – the transfer window is not even open yet and we have people saying we can’t sell him. I’d guess that the 50 mil is negotiable.
Then of course, if nobody wants to buy him, he stays. That’s it.
It’s not like he’s in a position to say “I’ll stay if you give me a raise”.
Not sure where the requirement for a salary increase is coming from from.
I would have thought the fact that there has been talk of him being available would be enough for him to realise he’s not really negotiating from a position of strength.
