Newcastle flop set to be handed summer lifeline by Eddie Howe – The Athletic

According to The Athletic, Newcastle defender Jamal Lewis will be given a fresh start by Eddie Howe and a chance to prove himself in pre-season.

Two years ago, the then 22-year-old signed for the Magpies for £15million from Norwich, arriving with bundles of energy and potential as well as a starting spot in the Northern Ireland national team.

At the time, even Liverpool were also after his talents after seeing a £10million bid rejected by the Canaries before he officially signed for Steve Bruce’s Newcastle in September 2020.

Since then, it’s fair to say that his career hasn’t exactly gone to plan – injury struggles as well as playing under a manager who has been proven to be out of his depth has hindered his development.

However, Eddie Howe is now willing to take a look at the full-back as he believes he can get more out of his ability – hopefully he may have a similar effect on him as he did with the likes of Joelinton and Emil Krafth.

While we are very much in the market for a new left-back – Matt Targett and Renan Lodi in particular – having Lewis ready and waiting in the wings could be a useful backup should we miss out on our original targets.
