Dan Ashworth now overseeing move for Portuguese winger after ‘positive reports’ – O Jogo

Portuguese newspaper O Jogo has revealed that Dan Ashworth – the new sporting director at Newcastle United – is now overseeing a possible bid for Braga wonderkid Roger Fernandes.

The report claims that we’ve been watching the 16-year-old winger throughout last season and have ‘promised’ to come in with an offer this summer after our recruitment team filed a host of ‘positive reports’.

Fernandes is already starting to break into the Braga first team. He’s scored three times in 10 appearances, featured in their recent Europa League campaign and, at the age of 15, became the youngest to ever play in Liga Portugal in a 2-1 defeat to Sporting Lisbon last year.

The talented youngster has drawn a lot of interest from European clubs and Braga have already rejected an offer of around €15million from Ajax back in January.

After making our first signing of the season in Matt Targett, it’s clear that Dan Ashworth is already making his mark.

Based on his impressive recruitment history at Brighton, which saw him bring in young gems who’d soon become first-team stars, you can see here why he may be happy to back a move for Fernandes:

  1. Buy him and loan him back for a year, it seems like he is doing great where he is. But he definitely looks a player for the future

  2. It seems obvious to me that Dan Ashworth is a plant from our previous owner.
Ashworth – Ashley – even the names are similar.

Then of course Ashley owns Sports Direct and Ashworth is coming in as “Sporting Director”.
Just too much of a coincidence.

Bring back Dennis Wise. At least we knew we could trust him!

  3. How is Ashworth making his mark?
Targett deal was set up before he arrived. Now looking at a 16 year old kid for whom a 15 million euro deal has been rejected. Flimsy story
