According to The Athletic, Newcastle United are one of several clubs considering a move for Italian striker Gianluca Scamacca.
The 6ft 5′ forward enjoyed an impressive season with Sassuolo last term, bagging 16 goals in 36 games – a tally only bettered by the likes of Ciro Immobile, Dusan Vlahovic, Lautaro Martinez and Tammy Abraham.
The report states that the 23-year-old is open to a move away from Italy and has received interest from PSG and Arsenal; although it seems the latter would ideally like to sign Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus.
As for Newcastle, it’s said both ourselves and West Ham are ‘monitoring the situation’, knowing he could be available for less than Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ivan Toney; Toon targets both Everton and Brentford look set to demand big money for this summer.
With Eddie Howe believed to be in the market for a mobile target man who can lead the line and score goals, it’s easy to see why Scamacca is someone we’re considering.
Interestingly, The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder wrote a piece in March confirming that Steve Nickson was an admirer of the Italian, suggesting he’s been on our radar for some time.
Here’s a few clips of the big man in action over the 2021/22 season:
He might be worth the risk over DCL given he’d likely be around 20m cheaper.
