EXCLUSIVE: Source close to Lyon’s Lucas Paqueta responds to Newcastle United rumour

Newcastle United may be admirers of Lucas Paqueta, but suggestions that a summer move to St James’ Park is gathering pace appear to be wide of the mark.

After reaching out to someone close to the Brazilian international over the weekend, we’ve been told that the club have NOT yet made any sort of move for the Lyon playmaker.

Transfer whispers on Friday night suggested we had upped our interest in the 24-year-old and were attempting to strike a deal with the Ligue 1 side, but we’ve been informed that this is strictly not the case as of Sunday 12th June.

This comes after L’Equipe released a piece claiming that Paqueta had decided to pursue a move away from Lyon this summer, with the French outlet claiming that Tottenham’s ability to offer Champions League football could give them the edge.

However, it’s The Chronicle’s understanding that Spurs do not have any edge on Newcastle should we up our interest, believing we could have a free run at the Brazilian based on his eagerness to team up with best friend Bruno Guimaraes at St James’ Park.

Paqueta visited England in March to watch his good pal in action at Southampton and was spotted on Tyneside last month to visit the Newcastle United midfielder. The occasion was to celebrate his wife’s birthday, not hold talks over a potential transfer, but it got fans talking and whet the appetite for a potential summer move.

That said, anyone hoping for an early move for the former AC Milan man may be disappointed as things stand, as we’ve been told that there’s been no approach from Newcastle as of yet.

Either the club are prioritising moves elsewhere first or have no plans to make a move for the Samba star, who wouldn’t come cheap with a reported asking price of £58m.

  1. We have not made and will not be making a move for Paqueta.
Any move for him would push Bruno back a step as any attempt to play them together would leave us light on the heavy lifting in midfield.
He’s a mate of Bruno’s and that’s about all the connection there has been.

A bit like Fraser being a mate of Wilson……..oh cr@p!

  2. This is good for long term development since still young has more years to serve the team. Furthermore, he is a skillful and good technique player can be capable to suit for several systems provided more choices for the coach. It is good deal !

  3. As defender line, I think try to bid Ibanez from Roma that is good choice because he is still young but with good positioning and depth. He is same level as Diego Carlos .
