Surprise signing ‘close’ as Newcastle make move for ‘huge prospect’ – The Telegraph

According to The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, a signing out of the blue looks set to arrive at St James’ Park.

He reports that we are close to completing a deal for Kilmarnock defender Charlie McArthur – a 17-year-old centre-back who’s believed to be a ‘huge prospect’ after making his first-team bow at the age of 16.

McGrath reports that the SPL side rate him highly and would like to keep him at the club following promotion back to the top flight, but sources at Kilmarnock accept it’s tough to stand in his way when a Premier League club come calling.

As a result, it looks like the Scotland youth international – who captains their U17 side – is on his way to St James’ Park to link up with the club’s Academy.

This will also be the second U23 signing we’ve made this summer, coming just a few weeks after highly-rated Galway United defender Alex Murphy sealed a move to Tyneside.
