Newcastle bid rejected by Premier League midfielder prior to £25m move – Fabrizio Romano

According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United made an attempt to sign Yves Bissouma prior to his move to Tottenham.

The former Brighton star completed a £25m move to Spurs on Friday afternoon, however Romano has revealed that Newcastle attempted to land the midfielder back in January.

The renowned Italian journalist claims that we sent an “important proposal” to the Mali international a few months ago, but he snubbed a possible switch to St James’ Park as he was holding out for Champions League football.

He’ll get that under Antonio Conte – whose Spurs side finished 4th last season – and could be a bargain signing at £25m, with him leaving for a cut-price fee as he’d entered the final 12 months of his contract at Brighton.

Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast, here’s what Romano said about our attempts to sign Bissouma before Spurs:

“Bissouma has always been a potential target for many clubs.

“I can reveal to you that back in January, Newcastle wanted him with an important proposal.

“But the player was waiting because he wanted to play in the Champions League this season and he can have that with Tottenham.”

A very good player who is a great tackler, physically good, slick in possession and an underrated dribbler, too, however we can’t have too many complaints when we ended up signing Bruno Guimaraes instead!
