£28m move hints at good news for Newcastle United – despite two targets signing elsewhere

Time will tell, but Newcastle United’s never-ending pursuit of Hugo Ekitike may have just received a hidden boost.

It was reported last week that Borussia Dortmund were providing late competition, with their ‘interest’ being one of the reasons Ekitike’s agent was delaying a proposed move to St James’ Park.

However, Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that the German giants have launched a formal bid worth £28m for Ajax striker Sebastien Haller.

Considering Dortmund have already signed 20-year-old forward Karim Adeyemi for £27m this summer, it makes you wonder if they’re no longer rivalling our bid to buy the Reims star? It certainly looks like they’ve moved on.

Elsewhere, West Ham have completed the signing of Rennes centre-back Nayef Aguerd, despite late interest from Newcastle United.

Sky Sports confirmed that we were attempting to hijack their move for the Moroccan last week, however the Hammers have now announced his arrival on a five-year deal.

Gavin Bazunu is another who won’t be signing at St James’ Park. TalkSPORT revealed that Dan Ashworth had held talks with the Irish goalkeeper, but he was sold on a move to Southampton – who are offering him first-team football – and has now signed a long-term contract at St Mary’s.
