According to German outlet BILD, Newcastle United ‘want to sign’ Borussia Dortmund winger Thorgan Hazard this summer.
With the 29-year-old no longer a regular part of their first team, it’s believed the German club are willing to let the player leave for ‘around €15m’ – a relatively small fee that could enable us to spend big elsewhere.
Last season, the Belgian international made 29 league appearances in all competition – only 14 of those were starts – bagging five goals and one assist as Dortmund finished runners up to Bayern Munich once again.
He is believed to be one of the highest earners at the club – which may explain why they’re willing to sell at a reasonable price – with BILD reporting that he earns around €7million per year.
As a versatile winger who has also operated at wing-back, the Belgian could add strength in depth but may not be a suitable long-term option due to his age and injury record, which has ruled him out of 25 league games in the last two years.

So we’re not taking players baased on their ability – we’re looking for bargains.

I’m personally not a big fan of this move – he’s nearly 30 and may be past his best – but I don’t really get this comment.
It’s been said on several occasions that our budget won’t actually be THAT big this summer – £80-100m has been suggested – so we won’t be bringing in four or five £30-40m players.
