According to Mark Douglas, Newcastle could make a summer move for Chelsea striker Armando Broja if they fail to land long-term target Hugo Ekitike.
In his latest piece for i news, The Chronicle’s former editor claims that the 20-year-old – who spent last season on loan at Southampton – is being monitored closely by the club.
He insists that we are still aiming to land Ekitike after agreeing a fee with Reims for the highly-rated Frenchman, however it seems alternatives are being sourced now a move for the Ligue 1 star has dragged on for several weeks.
Douglas states that West Ham are preparing a £30m bid for Broja, while Leeds United are also showing interest in the Albanian.
I was very impressed by Broja during the first few months of his loan spell at Southampton, as he looked to have the frame, technique and mobility to become a dangerous striker in the Premier League, however his form tailed off noticeably over the second half of 2022/23.
The 6ft 3′ forward bagged six goals and an assist in his first 11 starts for the Saints, but went 13 games without finding the net over the final few months of the campaign.
Still, it seems he could be one to watch if the Ekitke deal collapses and has the raw attributes of a player Eddie Howe may enjoy working with.
