Toon eye new deal for Eddie Howe favourite & ambitious double swoop still on the agenda – Report

According to The Mirror, Newcastle are set to open contract talks with Callum Wilson and remain keen to strike deals for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Moussa Diaby.

The 30-year-old has two years left on his current deal, but Eddie Howe – who spent six seasons with Wilson at Bournemouth – remains a “huge fan”, feeling he still has a big part to play in this exciting new project at St James’ Park.

Despite struggling with fitness and missing 30 games through injury, the England international has been crucial to the Magpies since signing in 2020, scoring 20 in 46 appearances.

With his injury issues in mind, it seems we’re determined to bring in another striker this summer. The Mirror report that we’ve been quoted a whopping £60m for Calvert-Lewin, but remain hopeful of negotiating a deal with Everton, while the same applies for Diaby after Bayer Leverkusen demanded £50m for the Frenchman.

How a new deal works for Wilson remains to be seen should we make a marquee signing up top, however he could benefit from the competition and thrive in a side with more creativity – although his greatest battle is staying fit, it seems.

The former Bournemouth man has been unlucky with injuries throughout his career, but he doesn’t lack confidence, often delivers when fit and will be determined to get back into the England squad ahead of this year’s World Cup.
