Around lunchtime, a raft of reports emerged on Newcastle United’s interest in Anthony Gordon, with one even claiming we’d launched a £35m bid for the Everton winger.
Sky Sports‘ Keith Downie has now issued an update on the latest transfer rumour that’s got Toon fans talking on social media.
He reports that the club HAVE approached Everton ‘this morning’ over a potential deal for the 21-year-old, but insists that no official bid has been made as of Wednesday afternoon.
It’s also said that Everton are not interested in selling this summer, with The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards and The Mail’s Craig Hope told it’s a deal that looks highly unlikely to go through.
Personally, there seems to be a host of reasons why this move is either unappealing or unlikely. £35m seems too much for a player who is still relatively unproven, not to mention the fact this would be a considerable downgrade on France international Moussa Diaby – who is believed to be our top target.
Perhaps this is all a smokescreen in a bid to get Bayer Leverkusen to reduce their demands?
