Newcastle 5-1 Gateshead: Almiron bags brace and 21 feature in pre-season win

Newcastle took on North-East neighbours Gateshead in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the club’s training ground today.

In our first game of pre-season, the Toon ran out 5-1 winners against the National League side managed by former Mag Mike Williamson.

Miguel Almiron scored twice, with Joelinton (penalty), Sean Longstaff and Matt Ritchie also finding the net, however the likes of Sven Botman, Nick Pope, Bruno Guimarães, Fabian Schär and Chris Wood watched on from the sidelines after only returning to training on Wednesday.

Elliot Anderson impressed out on the left in his first start since returning from a loan spell, setting up Matt Ritchie’s opening goal and coming close to scoring himself, and it was also good to see Allan Saint-Maximin picking the right pass after bursting through the middle with the ball.

Here’s the 21 players who featured – Kell Watts was the only player to play the full 90 minutes as Howe made wholesale changes at the break – and clips of all six goals:

Newcastle United (first half): Martin Dúbravka, Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles, Kell Watts, Paul Dummett, Jonjo Shelvey, Elliot Anderson, Joe Willock, Matt Ritchie, Ryan Fraser, Callum Wilson

Newcastle United (second half): Karl Darlow, Emil Krafth, Kell Watts, Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Matty Longstaff, Joelinton, Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almirón, Allan Saint-Maximin, Jacob Murphy

Subs not used: Remi Savage, Jay Turner-Cooke

The Heed – who currently play in the fifth tier of English football – recently signed Newcastle goalkeeper Dan Langley on a season-long loan and have a few former U23 talents on their books in Tom Allan, Adam Campbell and Owen Bailey.

  1. Perhaps Olly, you could make this a new featured thread? There’s a lot of comments on that last one now mate?

I was planning to mate. Wrote this match report while I was out, so will add a little more before making it a new thread later.

  3. I love the heed. I used to go watch them with my Gdad who lives in Felling.
He used to work at S&N brewery opposite SJP so hated going into Newcastle when it went.

Love their strip & really hope we can work with them in a mutually beneficial way – our younger players go on loan to help them out.

Today was just a run out, but a good chance for Howe to look at the likes of Watt & Anderson.

I’d have liked to see our young forwards getting some game time – do we need Broja or could one of those boys get a go ??‍♂️.

  4. Do we have enough to break into the top 6? NO.

We are 2 players and a fit Callum Wilson away.

We need a brilliant winger ad a 15 goal a season striker to back up Callum.

They are out there and I think Mandy and Co will get at least 1.

  7. I am not really worried about the defense and midfield anymore. Everybody forgets about Willock. He was a 21 year old kid when we bought him and needed to settle in. I had a bit of a tough time when I first went to University, even though I had lived in Munich before for 6 months on a so-called “gap year”. I think he is a good player and we should not discount him when we look at our midfield options.

  8. What I was doing was comparing my own experience to Little Joe because when you move away from family and friends it sometimes takes a while to settle.

The Women’s Euros is on a sports channel which I am sure you all know – ESPN. The next thing on this “sports channel” is a hot dog eating competition. They want to see how many hot dogs, inc buns, someone can snarf down in 10 mins. There is a mens and ladies competition.

That’s my ideal woman. Somone who can eat 30 hotdogs in 10 mins and not puke! And there is no sexual implication there, it is about gluttony and who in the world wants to watch a hot dog eating competition?

  11. Gilly, mate. I am off downtown Chicago next week to take pics with a new camera and then off off to Tuscany. Do you have any tips for me?

Everybody likes my photos (or they tell me they do 🙂 )

This is my idea of photos in order of importance:

    Subject
    Composition
    Light
    Angle
    Colour

Hi Eric, composition and light mate! I’ve written articles on both recently for a local magazine! Subject is up to you, colour will come with the light. Angle is part of the composition. I’ve seen some amazing images of Chicago. Most important though, Enjoy it! ?

  16. Seems to have gone a bit quiet on the transfer front, hopefully couple of quality signings bubbling away in the background.
We are still short on quality if we want to secure top half of table finish.

  19. There’s talk this morning that Paqueta might just be available this summer & it looks like Arsenal could be major competition.

    But what do we do??!!!

We need a RF and CF more than a ACM (imo) – but we seem to be making slow progress on both.

Do we prioritise the money to sign Paqueta and make do with Fraser or Miggy on the right for now – or Wilson & Wood up front for now so that we get that real quality in Paqueta.

Also – I think we are 4-3-3 .. would Paqueta change that?.

The first choices seem to be:

    FW – Ekitike
    RF – Diaby

If their agents rang tomorrow along with the agent of Paqueta & all 3 could be signed – who do we get?.

  20. Thanks for the reply Gilly, mate. I looked at your stuff on instagram and know you are quite good. I did attempt to set up an instagram page but kept getting e-mails from Russia and shut it down. I figured if they could find my e-mail it was a short step to find my bank details.

      (Quote)

  21. By forwards, that includes a flying right winger who could also be backup for Maxi. That sort of describes Diaby 🙂

      (Quote)

  22. Sorry to dwell on it, but I have seen enough of Miggy in the PL to know we need an upgrade. Fraser is better but I am not sold on his fitness.

      (Quote)

  23. Sharpy we definitely need an attacking mid that is comfortable on the ball. Our possession stat’s are still rubbish even though we had a good run of wins. We need to start dominating possession so a couple of ball players would not go to waste. I don’t mind a bit of quick counter attacking footy but not at the expense of a bit of control of the tempo of the game. Bruno is the only one that can claim to be comfortable on the ball. Anyways…

I think a lot predicted ww would just go out and buy the lot in one window.

It looks like (and my preference would be) it’ll be done over a number of windows.

  25. Read a really interesting interview with Bruno. Turns out the Brazilians think about the game entirely differently to us. We’re so linear in our thinking – 442, 4231, 433. It’s all rigid straight lines. The brazilians think in a very fluid way. Bruno says he’s a No5 or an 8 but not a 10. More like linking cogs. Pep’s joined them there!

For me – I’d like Diaby and a back up striker, probably young and willing to bide his time.

      (Quote)

  26. Georgio – that’s because the Brazilians have some of the most technically gifted footballers in the world – it used to just be their forwards & midfielders, but now even their goalkeepers can hit passes like play makers.

Pep has jumped on board coz he’s been at Barca, Munich & City and has either had the players or had the money to go buy the players to allow him to play that way.

We are used to less gifted players & having to play with that more disciplined formation.

With Paqueta we could easily move between formations throughout a game. But even City have that 1 constant sat in midfield – whether it’s been Fernandinho or Rodri.
Would that be Joelinton for us? – or would between the 3 of them rotate it?.

I guess old habits die hard, and I’m just used to having horses for courses ??‍♂️.

With all that said, and to answer my own question – Diaby, or that RF position would be my priority.

I just think it would give our attack better balance & take some of the attention off ASM so hopefully he could be more effective as a result as well – that’s not a pop at the lad, it’s just to say that teams know he’s our main/only creative player so target him.

      (Quote)

  27. Sharpster: I agree totally with what you say. I usually do. A fit Wilson will make a difference, I hope. When he came back he looked like he had gone to some Arnold Schwarzenegger gym. He didnt have an ounce of fat on him. Doesnt mean he wont twang his hamstring again, but I think he is really putting in the effort to stay fit.

Biden has gone to Saudi Arabi to talk about oil. Does that mean he doesnt care about human rights or that NUFC are still evil? Miguel Delaney? Eh!

      (Quote)

  29. Do I REALLY have to say this???

Somehow, we are evil for dealing with Saudis, but Trump and Biden can go there. Bush 1 even shunted the Saudi royals out of the USA after the world trade centre attacks. I know this because me Mam was staying with me in Chicago and it took her 2 weeks to get a flight back.

But Miguel Delaney will still be on their high horse about us, despite the arms sales by the US and UK to Saudi and the visits by Blair, Trump and Biden.

    How do you spell HYPOCRITE?

  30. Eric – I was reading an article on the fight against climate change – don’t worry I’m not about to glue myself to a motorway or anything like that.

It was a well written & balanced article actually, basically saying that if harvesting electricity is the future then we will have to accept mining is the only way to achieve that – in the beginning.

It was suggesting that copper & lithium will be key. Around 15 ton of copper is required for a medium sized wind turbine (to get the energy back to a storage unit as well) and lithium for batteries.

That would make Chile the new Saudi as it has huge reserves of both. Countries like Peru & Australia have some too but nowhere near Chile.

It may be this is on the medium to longer term radar – but rather than seeking oil from these Countries I’d much rather see every Country pushing harder with that plan.

I also read yesterday that the land clearance of the Amazon is worse than it’s ever been.

Seems like a lot of lip service & photo opportunities these G summits – with not a lot of urgency to get stuff don’t off the back of them.

      (Quote)

  31. Let’s say Arsenal sign Paqueta and not us, how long before he starts telling his mate Bruno how great the big city is and unsettling our star man .
Rather we sign him tbh, he can play more than one position too.

  32. Anyone watching mens tennis final ?Nick is the most wound up player I’ve seen since McEnroe

      (Quote)

  33. Kim – Arsenal have made some good signings this window & obviously have a few Brazilians of their own in Gabriel, Martinelli & now Jesus.
They have some good young English players there too – both them & Spurs have improved well so far.

If I’m Paqueta, other than Bruno being at NUFC, Arsenal would still be the better option at this moment in time – in terms of top 4 chances, winning a trophy (carabao cup or FA cup only – but still a trophy)

We are a project, but so are Arsenal to a degree – and are ahead of us in that build.

I take no pleasure in saying any of that, but that’s just how I see it at the moment.

Signing Bruno & Botman is a good indication to Paqueta of our intent – but the other signings don’t really inspire – good players & exactly what we need, but they don’t really get players like Paqueta ringing their agents demanding a move to NUFC.

I’m not saying I don’t think we stand a chance – I definitely do. I just think if it’s a straight choice, I could see Arsenal being his preferred option.

      (Quote)

  34. Kim – I watched the final & thought Novak was excellent – his experience shone out in the end.

Nick was excellent in the first set & still played some good shots & actually blew some big chances – especially in that 3rd set.

But his head went & he had a real problem with whatever his team were or weren’t doing – or that was his excuse. Have to be honest, if I was up there I’d have jumped down and wrapped that racket round his neck!! ??.

It was saying he doesn’t have a coach – he needs one!! and a sports psychologist to try and help him channel all that nonsense – but he just seems too immature to take instruction or direct from someone else.

It’s a shame coz he’s a real talent going to waste if he stays on the path he’s on.

  35. I am getting even more worried now. More so than Sharpy and Aussie I think.

I went to Oregon and couldn’t go to Mt Hood because of wildfires.

  37. I watched the news and saw the sequoia trees took 3,000 years to grow. In Alan Shearer terms he would have scored 30,000 goals in that time taking into account injuries and time at S’ton and B’burn.

      (Quote)

  38. And Miggy Almiron would have scored at least 3 in that time period! Not sure if Jonjo would have ever got past the 1st man at a corner though?

      (Quote)

  39. My idea has always been to never let Shelvey take free kicks or corners. He scored one by mistake last year and that is the only one I can remember.

If we have the squad room I would have Noel Edmonds and Little Jimmie Kranky ahead of Jonjo for set pieces. Is Bruce Forsythe still alive? I would have him ahead of Shelvey as well.

      (Quote)

  40. Better free kick takers than Jonjo Shelvey:

  41. And for corners? Better than Shelvey?

  48. The Isak situation is a lot like the Diaby one for me.

If we have the chance to sign a player of that quality then get it done!!. If that means having to try and loan a RF or making do with either Fraser, Miggy or Murph in that position for now – and I know that might read harsh so I will say now that ‘make do’ is for want of a better term. They are decent players and would do a good job til Jan or next summer imo.

But Isak is one of the best young players out there – and one to build a team around imo. I’m far happier with that one than the Ekitike one to be honest.

  59. Gilly – I watched it too. Free stream on NUFC TV of perfect quality.

Begs the question – if you can watch a friendly in Austria on a Friday afternoon, why can’t you watch a PL match @ SJP on a Saturday afternoon???

Anyway, I agree it was a decent game & decent run out – and Joelinton didn’t break anyones leg 😂🫣.

Watching the first half though made me think our priority should maybe be that midfielder that can get between the lines a bit more – we struggled with that a bit I think. Paqueta would be perfect for that.

Thought Murph & Fraser did well on the right – and Miggy is always an option there too.

I’m not so sure about Dummett or back up LB now though. If Targett was out for any great length of time we might suffer.

The bloke has a wealth of experience and one of my biggest criticisms under Ashley was if you can’t afford the top players you appoint the best possible backroom people to grow the club – Eales & Ashworth are just those types of appointments.

I’d happily see Eales sort a deal to bring this young lad with him as well:
