Watch goals from Newcastle 5-1 Gateshead as club release official highlights – Video

Newcastle United kicked off pre-season with a 5-1 win over Gateshead today, seeing Miguel Almiron score twice against our North-East neighbours.

Matt Ritchie opened the scoring after latching onto an Elliot Anderson cross and Joelinton – who looked impressive in the highlights – also converted from the spot.

Sean Longstaff won that penalty and also got on the scoresheet himself, arriving late into the box to finish from a Joelinton cut-back.

The clip also features some driving runs and good work from Allan Saint-Maximin, with Karl Darlow beaten to the ball and rounded for Gateshead’s second-half strike.

Watch all the goals below via the three-minute highlight video released by the club, followed by a look at all 21 players who were handed runouts by Eddie Howe:

Newcastle United (first half): Martin Dúbravka, Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles, Kell Watts, Paul Dummett, Jonjo Shelvey, Elliot Anderson, Joe Willock, Matt Ritchie, Ryan Fraser, Callum Wilson

Newcastle United (second half): Karl Darlow, Emil Krafth, Kell Watts, Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Matty Longstaff, Joelinton, Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almirón, Allan Saint-Maximin, Jacob Murphy

  1. I know we had Bruno, Pope and Botman on the bench, but Howe has a long way to go if he really does want two strong players for every position. Today he played Darlow, Dummet, Richie and Murphy who should all be gone, Fraser and Almiron are back-up at best, Kell Watts played both halves of a match in which Howe intended to play 2 completely different teams, Matty Longstaff was pulled back from the reserves where he had just been banished to make up the numbers, and half of the players not mentioned really aren’t that good. I wasn’t actually worried about Newcastle’s first choice team because i hadn’t really thought about it, until today. Despite the bounce since December, we really don’t have a strong 11, never mind a strong 25. Enthusiasm and passion will only get you so far.
