Newcastle ‘close’ to agreeing deal with Sheffield United over third summer exit – The Telegraph

It looks like Ciaran Clark is the latest Newcastle United player heading out of the exit door.

As revealed by The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, the club are ‘close’ to agreeing a loan deal that allows the Republic of Ireland international to join Championship side Sheffield United for the 2022/23 season.

Given the 32-year-old is out of contract next summer, a move of this nature would spell the end of his time on Tyneside, as he’d be a free agent upon his return in 12 months time.

Not only was Clark left out of Eddie Howe’s 25-man squad for the second half of last season, it was confirmed a few days ago that he, Dwight Gayle and Jeff Hendrick have all been asked to train with our U21s after returning for pre-season.

The 32-year-old has been a solid servant in the main, helping us win promotion back to the Premier League all those years ago and often being a reliable option under Rafa Benitez, however he’s been on the decline for a few years now, making this a deal that could work well for all parties.

With Woodman and Hayden already moved on, hopefully Gayle and Hendrick are next, as it’s vital that we shift deadwood, trim the wage bill and create space in the squad to allow for more incomings over the final eight weeks of the transfer window.
