Sky Sports: Medical in ‘next 24 hours’ with player now on the verge of Newcastle United exit

Earlier today, The Telegraph revealed that Sheffield United were ‘close’ to agreeing a deal to sign Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark on loan.

Now, Sky Sports have confirmed that the centre-back is on the verge of sealing a move away from St James’ Park, stating that the 32-year-old will undergo a medical at Bramall Lane in the ‘next 24 hours.’

This will almost certainly spell the end of his six-year stint on Tyneside, as he is out of contract next summer and will become a free agent at the end of his season-long loan spell at Sheffield United.

It’s a shame we’ve not been able to find a buyer to recoup a small fee, but moving on a player out of Eddie Howe’s plans will be a good job done.

Considering they’re signing him on loan when he’s entering the final 12 months of his contract – the sort of deal that doesn’t happen all that often – you’d like to think the Blades are covering his salary in full.

Clark’s no longer good enough to cope at Premier League level, but he’s been a solid servant over the years, being a reliable part of our promotion bid and rarely letting us down during the Rafa Benitez era.
