French media claim Newcastle could hijack Leeds’ move for PSG talent after bid falls £4m short

Newcastle United look set to rival Leeds in their pursuit of PSG forward Arnaud Kalimuendo, according to reports emerging from France.

This comes via L’Equipe, who have revealed that the South Yorkshire side have launched a £17m bid for the 20-year-old.

It’s believed this falls £4m short of PSG’s asking price – set at £21m – yet the French outlet claims Newcastle could now launch a counter offer to rival Leeds’ opening bid.

This isn’t the first time we’ve been linked with a move for Kalimuendo, with Foot Mercato revealing back in April that Toon scouts had been tracking the versatile forward.

He spent last season on loan with Lens and bagged an impressive 13 goals, making him one of just six U21 players to have scored 10+ league goals in Europe’s top five divisions this term.

The France U21 international can operate up top or out wide, offering the sort of versatility and potential that made a move for Hugo Ekitike so appealing.

With him ticking plenty boxes and appearing to be available at a reasonable fee, this may be another one to watch in our search for a new forward? Here’s a few clips of him in action:

  1. The initial Leeds bid was placed before PSG put a price on his head, so being just £4m short wasn’t a bad guess for starters. No doubt they’ll go back with an improved offer if they still want him.
