According to French outlet RMC Sport, Newcastle have switched focus to Bordeaux striker Sekou Mara after missing oiut Reims’ Hugo Ekitike – who looks set to join PSG.
The 19-year-old bagged six goals in eight starts during Bordeaux’s relegation season in Ligue 1, also helping France to glory at this summer’s Toulon tournament – outshining Ekitike as he went on to bag five goals for the U20 side.
Despite the club battling financial difficulties resulting in demotion to the third division, Les Girondins are demanding €15million as well as a sell-on percentage for anyone looking to strike a deal.
In terms of competition, Atlético Madrid, Lyon and Monaco have also shown interest in the Frenchman while the City Football Group – led by Manchester City and including French side ESTAC Troyes – are scouting Mara.
The problem should not be with prying the youth international away from his club, but fending off other suitors and ensuring he is well aware of the exciting project that we are building on Tyneside.
