£3m payment goes public – Bargain of the summer by Newcastle United’s new owners?

Nick Pope cost Newcastle around the £10million mark – but that fee won’t be fully paid until July 2025.

Burnley’s registration of charge – recently published via Companies House – reveals that we’ve paid just £3m this summer for the England international, with the rest of the deal set to be spread across increments of £2.33m over the next three summers.

This structure of payments can only boost what remains of our summer transfer budget, offering an insight into our new approach in a bid to maximise spending – something Mike Ashley always opted against as he insisted on paying up front.

Newcastle have struck a similar agreement with the Clarets surrounding the transfer of Chris Wood, paying £12.5m in the January transfer window and the rest to be paid by February next year.

The intelligent new transfer strategy of ‘buy now, pay later’ allows the club to spend more effectively while appeasing financial fair play restrictions and remaining competitive transfer market.

Remember Geordies: billions in the bank does not equal billions to spend, and this savvy way of squad building will allow us to improve for years to come.

A £10m deal already seemed a snip, but an initial payment of just £3m for Nick Pope – a Premier League proven stopper in his prime – could turn out to be the bargain of the summer!
