Newcastle beat Burnley TWICE in Portugal as seven Mags get on the scoresheet

After setting off for a six-day camp in Portugal on Friday afternoon, Newcastle took on Burnley in a series of short behind closed doors training games earlier today.

The club reveal that ‘two evenly split’ Newcastle teams played against ‘experienced and youthful Clarets sides’ before switching opposition after 45 minutes.

Game one saw us beat a young Burnley side 4-1 over the opening half, with goals coming from Joe Willock (2), Elliot Anderson and Miguel Almirón.

In the second 45, Miguel Almiron scored again against a stronger Burnley line-up, with Callum Wilson also finding the net in a 2-1 win over the final 45.

Elsewhere, a separate Newcastle XI – captained by Dan Burn – won their opening half 1-0 against an ‘experienced Burnley side’ thanks to a goal from Allan Saint-Maximin.

In the second half of this game, Matt Ritchie and Jacob Murphy then scored against a ‘younger-looking’ Clarets XI, giving us a clean sweep of wins ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Benfica.

Game One (4-1 and 2-1):
XI: Pope, Krafth, Botman, Burn, Bondswell, Shelvey, Joelinton, Guimarães, Ritchie, J.Murphy, Saint-Maximin.

Game two (1-0 and 2-0):
XI: Darlow, Targett, Dummett, Lascelles, Trippier, S.Longstaff, Anderson, Willock, Fraser, Wilson, Almirón.

SUBS:
M.Longstaff (on for Anderson)
Turner-Cooke (unused)
Muñoz (on for Almirón)
A.Murphy (unused)

  1. Good write up Olly, thanks mate. Good to see us score some goals, even in a training games.

Cannot understand why we didn’t go for Scamacca. Price is good, age is good and he’d defo fit into our team. Oh, and we need a striker!

  2. Yeah, good article Olly mate. An interesting format to a training camp – good idea though.

It’s great to see Willock back among the goals, and it can only do Miggys confidence the world of good finding the net.

I really don’t want to encourage the sale of Miggy because he works so hard when he plays – can’t fault his enthusiasm, but goals & assists are what matter most & his stats are poor. This can only help.

But will it help Anderson?. I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen on him & actually think he should stay with the squad rather than going out on loan. We can use 5 subs next season & from what I’ve seen I think he could be handy off the bench & could well develop into a first team regular – though I think that’s some where off yet. But he’s certainly doing everything he can with the chance he’s been given this pre season – really impressed with the lad.

  3. Gilly – I agree regarding Scamacca. For that price & our need for a CF, we should 100% be in the mix for him.

I hate to start doubting, so I’m not going to just yet. I’m going to say that they clearly feel there’s still a chance of Diaby and our other main targets … I trust them … but the last 14 years of total incompetence makes it hard not to jump to the default thought they don’t have a plan. But NO!!, this is a different bunch & im sure they’ll get the job done.

  4. Jonjo is saying we should aim for Europe. I totally agree and think Shelvey is a blo0dy good player as long as he has someone quick next to him and is NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE FREE KICKS.

Jonjo probably has the quickest football brain in all of our team apart from Bruno.

      (Quote)

  5. I went off Jonjo under Bruce because you cannot let the other team press him. He doesn’t panic, but he is slow. You just cannot let the other team get at him which was Cabbage’s plan for every game.

  6. I don’t give a **** about these other 19 year olds. Let’s see what our own 19 year old (Anderson) can do and just get Paqueta and Harrison.

  7. I talked to me mam today coz I was worried about the heatwave and her dog. She has an 11 year old staffy. I wasn’t that worried about me mam even though she is 80.

Well, she has a cooling pad for the dog and 3 fans 🙂

      (Quote)

  8. Eric – our heatwave lasted less than 48hrs mate – it was bloody hot no doubt, but there was a lot of hype for 2 days imo.

Pleased your mam & the dog were ok though.

  9. Apparently the door on Diaby isn’t totally closed. He said himself he would come . . . we’ll see.

      (Quote)

  10. Georgio – I can imagine BL driving the move as well. That kind of cash could be huge for them – if the fee is £40-50m.

The fact no other deal seems to be progressing would suggest that they are still working on the likes of Diaby or Paqueta.

      (Quote)

  11. Despite what’s been said on budgets I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re still working on both. Particularly if they’re doing deals like the £3m up front for Pope. We’ll be well within FFP rules. It’s how everyone else does it.

      (Quote)

  12. Georgio – when I say working on both I don’t necessarily mean to signing both. I agree it won’t be a bottomless pit, but it would be foolhardy to put all our eggs in one basket.

I also don’t believe the Harvey Barnes rumours either. He’s a left winger and we don’t need one.

      (Quote)

  13. Strong rumours that a deal for Paqueta is done, new owners keen to stop the deal but old owners have rubber stamped it. Probs BS, we will see.

      (Quote)

  14. Sharpy: Miggy’s goals and assists stats are terrible. I keep going back and forth on him because his general play is usually good. He could be backup to ASM?

My question is WAS HE BRUCED? The cabbage had him playing as a defensive mid who was tasked with bringing the ball out from the 9-0-1 system. Is it any wonder he had no assists if he had no-one to pass to? He probably deserves another chance unless we get an offer of around 15 million.

      (Quote)

  15. I think that is my general question about a lot of our players – WERE THEY BRUCED? He had wingers playing as full-backs (alongside the other full-backs) and even Shelvey as a centre-back. If everyone is on our 18 yard line for most of the game, how can we even judge them as attackers? Then there is Lascelles! We all know his distribution is not the best part of his game, but can you really blame him for hoofing it if he is stuck on our 18 yard line for 89 minutes?

Whoever we don’t sell starts with a clean slate this year with me.

I know we have had 6 months or more of Eddie but most of that was desperation times given what he walked into.

      (Quote)

  16. I also see talk of people on twitter criticizing Eddie. Are they mental? Look at what he walked into. We were desperate for every point. The fact that we eventually finished the season well away from relegation is down to his brilliant management. Some say we were lucky in certain games. That might be true, but we were also unlucky in other games like Chelsea and Everton. Swings and Roundabouts!

Then there is Wood. Certain youtubers and Gibbo and McDonald seem to have a vendetta against him. They should watch the documentary “Minus 17” where Eddie took Bournrmouth from 2nd bottom of the football league to safety. He did it partly by getting a focal point to lead the line who didnt necessarily score a lot. Sound familiar? I dont know where some of these pundits, journos and ex-players have been burying their heads? Maybe I do – up their own @rses.

  17. There have probably been 3 miracles in English football over the last 20 years and Eddie Howe has been in charge of 2 of them.

The first, that was not Howe, is Leicester winning the PL.

2nd is Howe saving Bournemouth from oblivion. They were adrift in 91st place in the football league with bailiffs knocking on their door.

3rd is saving NUFC with an unfit and demoralized squad who had no wins in 14 games. And doing so seemingly with ease. But it was not easy. Some fans see the finishing points total and forget exactly how hard it was to get there.

      (Quote)

  18. I will be eternally grateful to Eddie Howe for letting me watch my team that I have supported for 50 years from 4,000 miles away. Let there be no doubt that we were going down under the cabbage. They dont show any Championship games in the US. The takeover was important but it was Howe who made the difference.

  20. Icedog: I will tell you a story about me and the heat from last week. I think I got heatstroke.

      (Quote)

  21. Ice:

I was coming back from an errand that was 3 miles away and decided to walk. It was 40 degrees celcius, but I am in decent physical shape in my 50s.

After like a mile, I thought – this doesnt feel good. I stopped in a pub and had a pint and 3 pints of water,

After another mile, I thought – this feels worse. I stopped in another pub and had a half and another 3 pints of water.

I was thinking about getting a taxi, but I was also thinking also that I was re-hydrating,

Anyway… I get home and threw up every ounce of beer and water I had drank.

Lesson learnt at my age. GLOBAL WARMING. You have to be careful about this dehydration and overheating stuff. It had never happened before with me throwing up. My mantra was usually – drink tons of water and you will be fine.

      (Quote)

  22. Icedog: ha, ha, ha. I think my vomiting tells anyone I had heatstroke. I think I have to be more careful from now on.

      (Quote)

  23. It was heatstroke though. I was close to fainting. But, after I threw up I felt better and thought after like an hour I better get some liquid in me so had a cup o’ tea, I kept that down no probs.

  24. According to the papers Lyon are trying to sign Rabiot – he’s currently training with the U23s at Juve coz they don’t want him.

If Lyon get Rabiot does that target a Paqueta move???.

  25. ERIC dont make a silly mistake going from being red hot and sickie feeling to a cold shower you could bring on a stroke mate, just cool down slowly give your body time to recover dont shock it.,my wife was a nurse in recuss dept the amount of runners, weightlifter that over work grab a ice cold shower and took a stroke, dont do it pal

      (Quote)

  26. With the charity shield this weekend & the PL season starting again the weekend after – do we need to see at least some movement on some of our transfer targets this week??.

      (Quote)

  27. According to SSN WH have agreed personal terms with Scamacca – it is boiling my p!SS a bit that they seem to be making that signing unchallenged – certainly by us.

He looks to me a quality young CF, every bit as good as Ekitike if not better.

I can only think he’s not on our shortlist – but I can’t think why he wouldn’t be.

Does this mean we favour Broja??.

Are we looking to cheaper options to try & address all 3 positions that need strengthening (CF, RF, CM).

I can’t figure out why WH are having such a clear run at this player???.

      (Quote)

  28. Sharpy, yep I am a bit concerned tbh, we are very short up front, not so much in numbers but in quality, Wilson is fine but Wood as much as I like him isn’t gonna get as many as a fit Wilson and neither will Joe or Maxi. If we just end up going for potential for the future then we may as well keep Anderson frankly.

      (Quote)

  29. Draxler stories hotting up, not sure about that one, he hasn’t played much football recently, never saw that one as a possibility.

      (Quote)

  30. I think I would make a move for a Chelsea player. They have a history of giving up too early on some pretty good players – Mo Salah, Kevin de Bruyne anyone?

They have Hudson-Odoi, Pulisic and Werner. I think we could get any of them for about 40 mil.

      (Quote)

  31. Kim – Draxler is a very good player, but is more a left forward or central.

It depends which Draxler comes. If he turns up and starts playing & the fans take to him, we’d be getting a real player.
If he’s just looking to get out of PSG and doesn’t put the graft in he could end up being a very expensive luxury.

  32. I look back, and it is not that far, because it was last week 🙂 And I think – that was a strange thing. I am not that old either. 50 is the new 40 🙂 But, I puked up from heat stress so I think this global warming thing is real.

      (Quote)

  33. Eric – that made me laugh out loud there buddy. Melting ice caps, rising sea levels, wildfires like never seen before, flooding & extreme weather around the global – but you’ve felt Pat & Mick after a 4 mile walk in the extreme heat & now you think this global warming think might be real 😂😂.

That’s not meant to come across in a d!ck way by the way.

      (Quote)

  34. Sharpy: I never think you are a d!ck, mate. Some of these players you and Prem come up with, I have no clue who they are so it enlightens me.

      (Quote)

  35. Eric – I’m sure it was mate, and I only stressed I wasn’t being a d!ck coz I know how posts can read sometimes.

But that post could have been a Ricky Gervais type stand up line on global warming the way I read it 😂

      (Quote)

  36. Eventually we will have to bust our wage structure, but I dont think Werner is the player to do it for. He was brilliant in Germany, I watched some of his games. But, he hasnt been great at Chelsea so I think he is a big risk in England. I would rather go for Hudson-Odoi who I think is on like 100k a week which would still fit into our wage scale.

      (Quote)

  37. Eric – do you think there is a reluctance this window because they fear the media backlash if they did start spending big?.

      (Quote)

  38. Sharpy: I think that is exactly what we are doing. Holding back for a while in order to take it a bit easy and let the cartel stay calm. Soon, we will not give a **** though and will be top 4.

      (Quote)

  39. Does anybody have a clue who will win the England/Sweden game? I would say Sweden, but England are at home!

It is on live here, so I am going to watch it. Women’s football is actually pretty good now.

      (Quote)

  40. I watched the women’s world cup 20 years ago when Mia Hamm won it for the US, I thought, they are much better than I ever was! Now they are even better.

But I was never really good at football. I was always really good at Cricket 🙂

  41. I hope nobody thinks I am being derogatory in calling women lasses. When I was growing up, even in my early 20s, older men would say – how is it going, bonny lad! Lad, lass, bonny has never felt like an insult to me. Quite the opposite.

      (Quote)

  42. I am watching the England lasses, but if Miggy can add finishing to the rest of his game then we will have a good player.

      (Quote)

  43. I said on here when Gary Neville was hired as the women’s team coach that he was a cow pat, topped off with horse **** with flies swarming around. He has turned out to be even worse. Just ask the people in Miami.

      (Quote)

  44. So we lost 3-2 and Joelinton gets a very stupid red card in a “friendly”, which seemed far from friendly. I was very impressed with young Matty Bondswell. Looked a natural. And Wood is exactly that. Not very good. Hope Shelvey isn’t badly hurt, he played well too when he came on.

      (Quote)

  45. Wow just wow, well done the lasses, really enjoyed that. Final here we come. Have to confess I chose the lasses over us tonight.
